responsive teaching

Page history last edited by Lou McGill 1 year ago

As digital systems record more information about students' prior experiences, educational aspirations, and current progress in learning, so this information can be applied at the point of delivery to help teachers adapt the curriculum to learners' personal needs. Learning technologies in synchronous use, such as electronic whiteboards, electronic voting systems, and learning activity managements systems, allow teachers to respond in real time to feedback from learners. Even large-scale institutional systems such as VLEs and Assessment Management Systems, if used creatively, provide opportunities to adapt the curriculum to a particular cohort or individual. As with all technologies, though, the information available can only enhance the individual learning experience if practitioners and designers are committed to putting learners at the heart of teaching, and if they have the time and expertise to respond appropriately.

Closely related to responsive teaching is learners' own use of digital systems for reflection and personal development. The capacity of learners to take what they need from a learning experience is the other side of the coin to responsive teaching.
