What is this?
These are outputs generated as part of our development in Moodle of an online assignment submission system for the Department. This involved building on Moodle's existing assignment handling functionality and creating extensions for the features needed (to be shared with the Moodle community when complete).
Who is it aimed at?
These were originally collected for the internal team and stakeholders in the department to provide shared artifacts for mapping and understanding this complex system. This process, and some of the wider consultation around it, brought to light many misunderstandings about online assignment submission more generally (such as the difference between online assignment submission and online marking). The following surveys were developed to cut through the confusion in this area, and to establish real attitudes to the various functionality under consideration.
Since the initial work by the team, the wider University has started investigating this area. As part of their process they have taken an used these outputs as a starting point for their work - as such we feel these have use for other teams investigating this area.
How might it be used?
From our experience this is a very complicated area, where often processes are not documented in a form that enables wider understanding of the process beyond individual roles. Much information can only be discovered by asking highly targeted questions of stakeholders which can only be discovered by trial and error. Starting from a position of not understanding what the process might impact hugely increases the time taken to understand this space.
Starting with existing documentation (even if from another institution) can act as a valuable trigger for stakeholders to identify where their process is the same or differs. Also by representing the entire process on one page it allows stakeholders to understand how their role fits into a larger process something many are unaware of. More generally identification of the possible misconceptions around online assignment handling allows other teams to address them before they arise and avoid painful misunderstandings.
