Repositories

Page history last edited by Lou McGill 1 year, 1 month ago

A digital repository is a means of managing, storing and providing access to digital content. Repositories can take many forms, and all sorts of websites and databases could be considered to be repositories. Some repositories also offer social and community networking opportunities to share practice as well as content. Repositories are particularly being used to support the resourcing of curricula via, for example, management of learning content.

An institutional repository can support research, teaching, learning, and administrative processes. Although many institutional repositories are primarily established for the benefit of the organisation and its users, there is an increasing movement towards opening access to the wider community, sometimes in a global sense. Good intentions: improving the evidence base in support of sharing learning materials (JISC study 2008) provides a useful history of sharing and of learning and teaching repositories in the UK

Repositories have not been a major focus of the curriculum design and delivery programme but have been important in supporting the storage and retrieval of some of the learning content. COWL used their institutional repository to make project outputs available and have made some these materials available as Open Educational Resources (OERs). Other projects have used lightweight or ‘fauxpository’ online storage facilities such as Flickr to create, store, tag and collaborate around images and videos (Atelier-D, MoRSE), Diigo to highlight and tag resources (MoRSE) - Atelier-D created this function within their Open Design Studio and Dynamic Learning Maps also incorporated this function. VLEs have been used widely to store and make learning materials accessible.
