Independent learning is usually seen as critical for success at higher education, and increasingly also valued in school years and at college. As more and more study resources are available to students remotely (including the availability of open educational resources), some of the barriers to learning independently are removed. However, independent learning requires more than just access to resources. Some of the ways in which students are being prepared for independence - with the support of technology - include:
- Developing study skills
- Supporting reflection and PDP
- Designing around inquiry-based, research-based and case-based approaches (though all of these can be pursued collaboratively)
- Developing self-direction and self-efficacy for lifelong learning
