learning spaces and places

Page history last edited by Lou McGill 12 months ago

As digital technology becomes more ubiquitous, about our persons and in our environment, two trends can be discerned in educational design.

One trend is towards learning spaces that are intentionally designed with technology built in. Lecture theatres can incorporate lecture capture, electronic response systems, and other enhancements. Seminar rooms and social spaces can be wifi-enabled. Spaces can be designed for use of specific technologies such as haptics, or data capture, or for specific kinds of learning such as collaboration, or can be reconfigurable around different needs.

A second trend is towards learning away from campus, in places where access to learning and information would otherwise be difficult. Mobile technologies are particularly valuable to remote learners, whether on placement, on a field trip, or permanently located away from campus in the workplace or studying at home. Location-aware technologies enrich places with information that can be used for learning, such as geo-spatial information or augmented reality data. The development of virtual spaces that recreate traditional learning fora can be a useful approach for remote learners. The Atelier-D Project aimed to create a vitual design atelier for distance learners to simulate traditional spaces for artistic dialogue and sharing.

Technologies that have been particularly influential in rethinking space and place in learning include:

mobile technologies

immersive worlds

learning environments
